i have a sky full of stars

but they are very far away

my mother says the lake is closer

 

i don’t want fish no the stars

they glow 

they smell like pencil shavings and Daisy

 

still i get my ladder every now and then

mostly when i feel the fish

biting my toes

 

i take a star or two 

while they’re still white hot

 

i don’t know how but i use my hands

only fishermen use hammers

 

sometimes they speak

sometimes dancing

they skip sputter laugh scoff drown

i wonder when i will run out of stars
